As the newest city in Oregon, just 5 years old, we are a city on the move, a city in transition. We are the city that anchors south Deschutes County and south Central Oregon. Part of being in transition is, we've just put in place most of the goals of our comprehensive plan with the rest of them due to be completed by the end of June 2011.
Along with that, we have just passed our ordinance putting in place our zoning codes. Each month we see additional pieces of our city structure being put in place. When the citizens stepped up and incorporated this 100-year old community into the City of La Pine, they spoke in no uncertain terms about what they wanted in the way of a city. The loudest and sharpest demands were that we capture those parts of the vision we have for La Pine, "maintaining our small-town feel" and "local control"! Coupled with that were family wage jobs and respect for our seniors. These tenets resonated with those who have sat in Council from the beginning and continue to resonate with our current Council.

In 2010 La Pine celebrated its 100th year birthday!
During the celebration in September my wife and I were serving birthday cake and I struck up a conversation with a man who was grinning from ear to ear. He was someone I didn't know which is pretty unusual in a small community like La Pine. I asked him if he was enjoying himself, and he said "I just retired and moved here a month ago from Minnesota, and this is what I came for! A smaller, tight knit community full of pride in its past and excitement about the future! I just love it here! " he said.
Well, like this gentleman, many of us are "transplanted" Oregonians, but you'll meet some "real" locals occasionally, and when you do, be sure to spend a little time with them. They'll tell you some great stories about "how it used to be", and how excited they are about the future.

Greetings from the Friendly Frontier Town of "La Pine" in Beautiful Central Oregon! We celebrated 100 Years in 2010!
Our people have strong feelings about where we…"Live, Work and Play". We have a pride that runs deep and a commitment that is displayed through the events and organizations we support and participate in.
Frontier Days is a Grand Celebration of the 4th of July. Festivities include the Parade, Rodeo, Dutch-Oven Cooking and Fireworks display. Rodeo competitors and spectators travel from throughout the State.
La Pine is a place where you can belong, where you can make a difference… or a place to retire, sit on your front porch and go fishin' when you want to. It's a place where a helping hand does not go unnoticed, but a place where "Many hands make light work", as John Heywood would say.
